Scoring Method

The "Scoring Method" is as follows: At Chronicle of Bias we track the level of bias in various news organizations, document that bias and put it into a bar chart that can be easily and readily understood.  Each media outlet is evaluated daily, and scored on that day's product.  Up to 20 "L" points (blue) may be given for liberal and 20 "C" points (red) for conservative bent on any given day.  Blue points and red points are given for liberal and conservative items in the same publication on the same day.

Scoring:

Points may be given for news coverage if such coverage is judged to be partisan in nature.  Placement may be considered, as well as repetition.  For instance, the New York times ran the Abu Ghraib Iraqi prison scandal story on its front page for approximately 28 days straight, and would have probably earned points every day, after the story ran for several days, depending on the stridency and liberal tone of the articles.

Points may also be given for articles or columns appearing in other sections, such as Business or City and State, where the authors obviously promote one political candidate, party, and/or line over another.

The main generator of points however is the opinion section.  Publishers and editors like to say that they run just as many conservative columnists as they do liberal, a classic red-herring.  At CoB we do not award points based on a column’s author, but on the content of the piece.  It is not unusual for a piece by a "Conservative" columnist like George Will to get "L" (liberal) points if he or she says something bad about conservatives or Republicans, which is what the liberals who are running these publications are always looking for, and is what we call the "Primo template".

A bonus of up to 10 points may be given for out-and-out stupidity.

Special awards will be given in various categories, such as dumbest, most biased, etc.
